Named as an homage to a local movie house, Luna Flats now carries the name for a luxury downtown living and nightlife development in Lafayette, Indiana. Originally where the Luna Theater stood, the vacant lots have only served as surface-level parking since the historic buildings were demolished in the 1960’s. With the development of the nearby Lafayette Public Safety Building and removal of the underground sanitary “Pearl River”, the opportunity for this 5-story multi-family and retail project was born. Luna sports ground-level retail, relaxing green roof space, an adjoining fitness room, underground parking, and an exciting large roof patio that all support the nearly 100 contemporary apartments. KJG also worked with the city to provide semi-truck and tour bus access underneath the rear of the building so that the adjacent Long Center for the Performing Arts building’s equipment access was not affected. While tackling these many design aspects, KJG also balanced the design of the front façade with public consideration and a desire to keep the feel of the Upper Main Historic District.
