New City of Hope

Chicago, Illinois

Project Type

In July 2017 the Board of Directors of  New City of Hope Inc. asked KJG Architecture, Inc. to help them develop a long-range master plan and design for a new transformational community center on the southwest side of Chicago Illinois. This facility is a 60,000 square foot, two-story building housing two gymnasiums, locker rooms, as well as fitness and activity rooms. This facility also has two restaurants, a recording studio, a film studio, and classrooms for general education and career development. A medical clinic and 400-seat performing arts space rounds out this eclectic building.

The board challenged KJG Architecture Inc. to make a bold design statement worthy of the great architecture found in the Chicago area. Working with the understanding that there are three different cultural groups in four different communities involved, this building attempts to reflect the unique diversity of the community and attempts to show how different architectural styles, materials, and methods can blend together to make a bold statement. This building is to be a symbol to the community of what they can be if they look past their differences and look towards their strengths and similarities. The facility will be named the  Walter J. Butts Center and is scheduled to be completed and opened by July 2020.
